All videos embedding in courses should have both captions and a transcript file. Canvas Studio has a built-in utility for embedding captions, either automatically using speech-to-text or with uploaded captions in the .vtt or .srt format. Canvas Studio offers no utility for adding a transcript file to a video. Therefore, it needs to be done manually. This page offers guidance on creating a transcript file from the captions on a Studio video.

There are four requirments for using this technique for creating Transcripts from Captions:

Please follow these steps...

  1. Go to the page in your Canvas course where the target Studio video is located.
  2. Click the Live HTTP Headers icon in the top toolbar.

  3. A new tab like this will open:

  4. Switch back to the Canvas tab in your browser and click the Caption icon to turn on captions.
  5. Now switch back to the Live HTTP Headers tab in your browser. Find the URL in the left column that contains the word “media.”

  6. Right-click on that URL and copy that URL to the clipboard.

  7. Visit our utility at https://bullshark.landmark.edu/srt.php and paste the URL from your clipboard. (control-V)

  8. Click "Submit" to fetch the captions from Canvas Studio and convert them to a transcript.
  9. Click "Download Transcript" to pull the newly created transcript file to your computer.

  10. Take note where the transcript file has been downloaded to your computer.

  11. Return to the page in your course where the video is embedded and edit the page by adding the word "Transcript" below the video.

  12. Highlight the word "Transcript" and use the "Upload Document" option to upload the new transcript from your computer to your Canvas course and link it to the word "Transcript" on your page.

  13. Locate the transcript file you download to your computer earlier and click "Submit."

  14. Save your Canvas page.
